Technology Dynamics & Sustainable Development
Dirk Jan Peet
The section Technology Dynamics and Sustainable Development researches and teaches the fields of Technology Assessment, Technology Dynamics, Innovation and History of Technology focussing on sustainable (technological) developments.
Technology Assessment deals with an optimal balance between technology and technology development, and society. In doing so, it uses insights into the relations between technology and society obtained from technology dynamics and the history of technology. How do the processes that drive technological change function, to what extent can technology be influenced and how should it be influenced?
Sustainable development is a requirement for the future. What is the role of (improved) technology in this development? How can technological development be guided in a sustainable direction and how can we prevent new technologies from creating new problems?
Project Education in Sustainable Development
The section Technology Dynamics and Sustainable Development carries out the project Education in Sustainable Development, which was assigned by the University’s Board (‘College van Bestuur’). The goal of this project is firstly to supply students of DUT with basic knowledge of Technology in Sustainable Development, and secondly to fully integrate sustainability into regular university curricula. Additionally, the section co-ordinates the Sustainable Development Annotation - an annotation for the Master’s diploma at DUT - indicating that extra work has been done in the field of sustainable development.
